I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy... diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :) I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming! I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some? Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks. I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August. Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

Dave, I'm getting back on the horse so to say... Care to motivate me?

Dear Dave,

Thinkin' of you and hoping that with this new year has come grand repairs and progress in your body.

Stop by and fill me in on your adventures lately when you have time.

Happy Holidays Dave...keep up your incredible progress in 2009!

What's wrong with my weight machine?
October 14, 2008
oooh it'll be good to have the taskmaster back in the gym! ;)

and do start eating better again, dude! (like I should talk... but still, i'm working on it too) It's the liquid part of my diet that's killing me.

Been struggling a bit with eating healthy lately - due to financial reasons mostly but also convenience. That is changing this week with a fresh visit to the grocery store (all I have left in the house is pasta!). I am also going to start going to the gym again next week. I'm not completely recovered, but I can start to get some sort of work out in for sure.

Poor, poor, poor weight machine. All it ever wanted was to be loved, and Dave wouldn't let it...
August 31, 2008
Dave, how's that weight machine treating you?
August 21, 2008
70s 5x6, as the primary chest exercise or a secondary one?
August 19, 2008
I don't remember what I was doing on that machine... Just go for a max and then dial it down with that as a reference point...

PS - for those that asked, I will be updating the profile pic, I just don't know where to find a camera right now so will need a friend to catch my good side sometime soon :)

Hey now! I had a busy day today and I was/am pretty bummed about her having to leave so quickly. I am about to hop on and figure out what I can lift, though. What were you doing for bench? Need something to aim for :)
August 15, 2008
Dave, cool deal with her stopping in! Hey, did you use the weight set yet? SLACKER! ;-)

Thanks! It's good to be back, though it may take me a little while to get fully back into it, there's up days and down days, mostly emotionally, and sometimes I just don't feel up to it.

Had an appointment w/ my orthopedic surgeon this morning. Unfortunately, I was hoping he would give me the green light to go weight bearing on the bad leg but that is another two weeks away; this is so frustrating. Though I will make a largely 'full' recovery, there is some concern about the amount of muscle that was destroyed and had to be removed from my lower leg. It shouldn't keep me, functionally, from doing things, but might hold me back a little in terms of how well I can do some things. Time will tell.

On the good side, my girlfriend drove down from Boston last night after a concert she went to and surprised me at 3am! I haven't seen her in a while and that so made my weekend (month?). She stuck around and took me to my Dr's appt even. Of course it sucked when she left this afternoon, now I miss her even more...

Welcome back, Dave!! It's great to have you back on Traineo. I've missed "seeing" you around. I'm glad to hear that you are expected to make a full recovery! That's great!! Oh, and I think the shark story is a great one. I had to have a cyst removed from my side. It was pretty large and left a rather knarly 2" long scar. I like to tell people that I got stabbed in the side. You should see the looks I get before I tell them what really happened. It's fun. :)

My words do in fact have the power to hurt, and I am sorry... ;-)
August 07, 2008
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE!!! It's such a JOY to read you again! Thanks for taking a mo. to update us here as I for one have missed you plenty.

I am so very happy too that you have found another fine soul to match yours, which I have no doubt has helped you heaps on your road to recovery. I wish you two the very best.

And hey, bonus on the 25 pounds down. Not the optimal way to go about it but we takes whats we can gets.

I'm really quite lifted to see you shining throughout what can only be one helluvan ordeal. You're an inspiration on a number of levels and I'm sending you more healing frenchy vibes. I know you'll kick ass and before you know it, you'll be back in the fold,
with scar-stories told,
taking in all life has to behold.

If I was there, I'd give ya a formidable bear hug!

bryon, we're all tired of your inconsiderate nature. Your words have the power to hurt, and they do!
August 05, 2008
I just tell them I was the subject of a government experiment. The head is large to protect the extra large brain I now have due to the intense blast of gamma radiation they exposed me too...

What is your cover story for your issue... "I lost most of 'IT' because an alligator bit it off? It use to be much larger, no really..." ;-)
August 05, 2008
So, Bryon, what's your big head cover story to tell chicks? teehehehehe!
August 03, 2008
On a side note... I would go with the shark attack story, it sounds cool and the chicks will dig it... I'd toss in some nonsense about how you were filming a special on sharks for the Discovery channel when a little kid fell into the water and you dove in without your protective gear to save him and took the bite for the young lad. The ladies will melt... You gotta use what you have to your advantage! ;-)

"You think I look bad you should have see that shark when I was done with him!"

SMILE! Things will get better, they always do eventually...

Thank you, Minu!

I miss you all and am looking forward to getting back to the site. I had gotten moved from the hospital to a rehab facility and lost my internet. After 1.5 months laying on a hospital bed I'd lost about another 25lbs, but a bit of muscle as well. My left leg is still not weight-bearing, and once my ankle is healed (about 4-5 more weeks), I will be having my knee completely reconstructed surgically, so some more recovery. But after that, back on track!!

I expect to make a full recovery, and will be checking w/ my ortho surgeon on Monday to confirm that. I will, however, be left with some pretty significant scarring (8 surgeries on my left leg removing muscle and other soft tissue, covered with a skin graft), and I have been having some real difficulty emotionally with that - right now it looks like I was attacked by a shark :) I'm also having a tough time reconciling with losing this summer and the time I should have been spending on my relatively new relationship (that's the silver lining - I'm dating an absolutely amazing, gorgeous, smart, thoughtful woman), and doing those things we all plan for the summer. But each day brings improvement.

Thanks again, it means a lot to hear that people are thinking of me. My mojo is improving!
August 02, 2008
Dear Dave,

I don't know if you're still checking this site much anymore, but on the off chance you do pop in sometimes, know that you're in my thoughts.

I hope your recovery is taking giant steps and that your mojo is in fine form.

You're missed around here yaknow.

Healing hugs,

Minu

Hope you are doing better Dave!
July 06, 2008
Dear Dave,

Thinkin' and vibing about you lots and I hope that you're feeling better by the day.

Hoping too that you're surrounded by caring souls and at least managing to enjoy a good sponge-bath 'er two. ; )

Heal up well, mon ami!

HUGS,

M.

Hey bud,
I actually don't know Boston well enough to make a good reccomendation. I live here, but amazingly I know nothing about the city, lol. Sorry.

But on another note, it is good to see you back on here. Good luck with the journey you have in front of you.
June 23, 2008
Hey Dave

May you get well soon! Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers! Rest and regain your strength. I know you'll pull through like the cheerful warrior that you are!!
June 23, 2008
Many of you "know" Dave as a traineo regular. A few of us actually know Dave in the real world too. You may have noticed he has not graced the pages of this site in about a week or so. That's because he had an unfortunate automobile accident about a week ago.

Dave suffered some significant injuries, but he is receiving medical care and is working through the situation, trying to remain positive. He does not have internet access from his hospital bed, but we're working on that.

I asked him if it would be OK for me to post a little update on his where abouts and condition, and he said go for it.

If you would like to leave some words of encouragement here for Dave, I will occasionally print out your responses and bring them to him in the hospital until we can get him some wi-fi access. He has a long recovery ahead of him, but he's keeping his sense of humor, and really wants to get back on his feet and back on the road to a happy and healthy life.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers in the weeks and months to come.

Thanks!

"What about squats and light dumbell work?"

Yes, I think part of it is inertia -- I keep finding dumb reasons to put it off. This is where it helps to have a gym buddy to kick your butt into gear!

What's your diet look like, BTW? I'm staying on the oatmeal-for-breakfast, Saladworks 3 or 4 times a week diet and have maintained my body fat while losing 9 lbs, which is not too bad considering I only run 5k/3miles once or twice a week so far. I've dropped 400 kCal daily by stopping my 4-scoop-a-day soy protein powder supplementation, which may have something to do with it.
June 10, 2008
It's upsetting to be up this high again.. diet has been pretty good, though i've been eating a bit more than usual (I'm terribly hungry most of the day), but I'm eating healthy mostly. I'm also working fairly consistently in the gym.

I think I'm going to crack down on the diet again for a few weeks and see what I can do there. Part of the issue is affording the healthy foods, but I'll work on that.
June 07, 2008
Hey Dave ... I'm back. :) Hopefully we'll be talking more from now on.
June 03, 2008
FYI - mine is 195lbs
June 03, 2008
I'm hitting the gym again, doing real cardio, so you'll be playing catchup for a while! We'll be at 225 in no time.

What's your goal weight by the way?
June 03, 2008
Haha! It just *looks* that way :) I stopped creatine as of Friday and started running Thursday... I'll be taking a step back in lifting as well, as my shoulder injury from January was really bothering me yesterday. So, 2-3 weeks passive rest for my shoulder (no bench, shoulder, or arm work), and stepping up the cardio.

I'm on track, and looking forward to seeing those numbers move down real soon.
June 03, 2008
Looks like you're lagging behind buddy. I got 3 pounds on you already!!!
May 30, 2008
haha, got your note about it being 6 days since a weigh in. We have been on a hiking trip in New Hampshire the last week or so. I won't be back home officially til Sunday. I decided not to bring the scale on the trip.
May 29, 2008
So we're both around 247 pounds, eh?

Last one to 225lbs is a rotten egg!!!
May 29, 2008
While my diet hasn't been the greatest, it doesn't account for the weight gain. This must be the creatine... I'll keep an eye, start running again and just try to stay under 250... only a few more weeks on the creatine...
